The Principle Of Retrograde Dreaming
Do all our dreams have to do with the future, or do some have to do with the present or even the past? Many might readily admit that prophetic dreams can be about the present, but the Lord can sometimes also use dreams to reveal a person's past, so that it opens up a way for the interpreter to teach on things from past history, and what the Spirit is saying will be coming in the future based upon what the dream has revealed about yesterday.
Astronomers sometimes talk about planets being in "retrograde," which means they are either backing up in their orbit or appearing to. It can actually happen when a planet's rotation becomes so severe that it seems to wobble backwards for a moment. Astrologers use this to theorize that a person's star sign is in "retrograde" if nothing seems to be going right in their life.
By "retrograde dreaming" I mean nothing so dramatic or negative, but simply that sometimes people receive dreams which are not about their future or their present. They are dreams given by God specifically for retracing their past, as a means of providing an opportunity for covering it, getting it out in the open, and then using it as a foundation for future discussions on the subject at hand.
I will use one concerning my own life which a friend sent me recently. The reason the Lord sent this dream was so that I would be compelled to let him know about events which had happened several years earlier, so he would understand them in the context of what we had recently been discussing and would likely be discussing more in the future.
Car Loans & Loan Officers Dream
I'm driving a semi truck, and my wife is driving the car with my daughter. We are on a long road trip, but we decide to stop at a loan office to fix the car and the semi. But I knew the semi would be broken at the loan office. It was a prophesy. I knew it would happen and it happened. We get in, and someone starts robbing the loan office. I think they crashed thier getaway vehicle into my semi. The loan officers pull out guns. As I'm just standing there waiting for it to blow over, one loan guy threatens to shoot me in the leg, but I tell him to back off because I'm just a customer. It all calms down, and I'm waiting to talk to someone... They end up taking me on a flying sleighride. They gave me gum and it was preventing me from talking or laughing. I notice because this baby is making sounds that are making me laugh and I sound really weird. I'm trying to pull it all out of my mouth, and it takes a long time.
I need a loan to fix the car and semi, but no one seems to be helping me. The loan officer is ready to go on another trip in another vehicle. It's been like 4 hours there already and my wife is waiting with my daughter. So I decide to go ask her if we should just drive away and I can come back later. I try to tell the loan officer that I'll be right back. But they say it's too late, I lost the chance to get the loan, I explain my intentions, and they agree. I go to my wife outside. There are crowds of people there playing hacky sack and doing activities like at a music festival. I find her and tell her we should leave, but she's not listening and insults me in front of the crowd. I tell her I can't believe she would say that. Something like "I don't know why I'm with you." I start walking back to the loan office to say we will come back later.
We had been talking matters over concerning a different forum, and this dream basically laid out what my history and involvment there had been like; in some cases embarrassingly so, but I felt compelled to give him a full update on my past. The meaning was this: My "wife" in this dream was a female partner I was operating in dream ministry with at the time. "Husband" and "wife" terminology in dreams is nothing uncommon, and there was certainly nothing improper going on in that relationship. It simply represented the partnership we had in ministry, and it was a good one. She was prolific, and highly detailed with her descriptions when asked, so we worked very well as a team together.
Unfortunately the "loan officers" who represented the management at that site didn't completely trust me, in large part because of the people who came in to "rob the bank." This refers specifically to a group of Gnostics who had joined en masse and were causing all kinds of Hell I won't go into. But there was a personal friend who had now aligned herself with these people (she had been spiritually regressing since we last talked), and I was trying to explain to the staff how this person was an old friend, and that I was trying to redeem her spiritually.
Well, that just raised a lot of mistrust that I was potentially in cahoots with them somehow, hence why one loan officer threatened to shoot me in the leg, and why I had to tell him to back off cuz I wasn't one of the bad guys.
To make a long, sad story short, my purpose in being there had been to hopefully establish my ministry (the semi) there as an interpreter, to help promote that the gifts were still in operation today. Unfortunately, not only did they not approve that "loan," but even the sister I was working with eventually turned on me and shamed me publicly a few times. That wasn't pleasant, but then she had had a troubled past and may not have been ready to deal with all the stresses that came the real robbers entering that forum and me potentially being associated with it. The good news is that the dream suggested twice (both at the beginning and at the end) that I will be working with her again some day, and I will, based on numerous other dreams I've had since that time to the same effect.
But what would be the purpose in airing out my past through such a dream? I don't always spell things out for people, and sometimes I forget they may not know everything I've been through. Why should they? So the Spirit of God lays things out in a dream like this so that I will come forward and explain it in detail, whereby the dreamer can understand the history behind what happened in the past and better relate to what I will say exists at present and may be happening in the future.
When you understand that sometimes a dream can be a retrograde dream, you are no longer struggling to make sense of it in the future tense. It's indeed prophetic, because it's a description of events that took place which only God would know other than those involved. But it is not a dream about the future. It is a dream about the past, and receiving one can be a strange change of pace, like when astronomers see a planet going temporarily into retrograde. It can be very unexpected and out of the ordinary, but if you are not open to the possibility, you may misinterpret the meaning of a dream, thinking it is something about the future when in reality it is about the past, and events which took place many years ago.
