Earthquakes, Billows Of Smoke, & The Asphyxiation Of The Earth By Fire

The hand of the Lord shall be known to His servants, and His indignation to His enemies. For behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with His chariots like a whirlwind, to render His anger with fury, and His rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by His sword the Lord will judge all flesh. And the slain of the Lord shall be many - Isaiah 66:14-16
What happens when a house catches on fire with people still trapped inside it? Coroners know that in many cases it is not the fire that kills them but the smoke. Fire removes oxygen from the room while replacing it with toxic fumes that choke the victim to death. But what if this were to happen on a global scale?
No, this is not a science fiction story. It is unfortunately coming to pass when the Lord returns for His bride, catches them away to be with Him, and then pours out the fury of His anger upon the earth. That this will happen is strongly suggested by something Peter said in his second epistle, where he stated the following:
Both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the Day of God, because of which the heavens being on fire will be dissolved, and the earthly elements will melt with fervent heat? (2 Peter 3:10-12)
What did he mean that the heavens would be dissolved, being on fire? Huge earthquakes are prophesied to occur in the end-times, and with them massive amounts of smoke will billow up into the earth's atmosphere. As was prophesied through the prophet Joel, "I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the Lord." (Joel 2:30-31)
Massive Earthquakes
Our Lord prophesied that one of the signs of the end of the age would be manifold earthquakes in various places (Mark 13:8), and these will not only be increasing in frequency but in intensity as well. One will be the worst earthquake to occur in human history. From the language used, it is clear that this earthquake will be so severe that the tectonic plates underneath the earth's crust will be broken up and begin to drift again, causing the islands to "flee away" as it were in what is referred to as continental drift. This earthquake will be so severe it will cause great mountains to crumble and fall.
And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. (Revelation 16:18-20)
Such earthquakes will be accompanied by massive seismic upheavals of lava and fire, creating smoke that blackens the sky and darkens the earth's atmosphere, as has been mentioned. That the stars appear to "roll up like a scroll" and large sections of the constellations in the night sky begin disappearing from view will be yet another visible effect:
I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. (Revelation 6:12-14)
These will be manifestations of God's anger, which scripture says will be accompanied by earthquakes, fire and smoke, for He will "cause the earth to shake" before Him.
The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook. They trembled because he was angry. Smoke rose from his nostrils. Consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. (Psalm 18:7-8)
The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it. Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire. The rocks are shattered before him. (Nahum 1:5-6)
This then is what is coming. But on a scale even those familiar with Biblical prophecy may not be aware of, for just as the entire earth was destroyed by water the first time, so too will it be destroyed by fire the next, a parallel Peter referred to in his second letter as both causing the destruction of the planet:
By the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the Heavens and the earth - which are now preserved by the same word - are being reserved for fire unto the Day of Judgment and the perdition of ungodly men. (2 Peter 3:5b-7)
Earthquakes broke up the "fountains of the great deep" during the time of the flood, and it appears the Lord will break up the tectonic plates once again, resulting in the entire planet being turned into a smoking waste through seismic upheavals, continental drift, and the very heavens being set on fire and "dissolved." All the smoke which fills the earth's atmosphere will then make it appear as if the sun is turning to darkness and the moon to blood, the result of from a combination of wildfires, volcanic ash, and what is known as Rayleigh Scattering.
A phenomenon called Rayleigh Scattering makes the Moon appear red, orange, or yellow by scattering shorter-wavelength blue light more than longer-wavelength red light, and this effect is intensified by larger atmospheric particles such as those found in smoke, dust, or volcanic ash... Particles from wildfires, dust storms, or heavy pollution scatter light in a similar way to the atmosphere. These particles, sometimes including a high concentration of pollutants, can increase the redness of the moon.
